Kate Chu , WWPFG Heirloom

Hello  everyone we had some technical difficulties but i think we are up and running now , So sorry for any problems before.

Kate was the first President of the WWPFG and has worn many hats since the beginning helping spread the word of Pressed Flower Art in many ways .
She has worked hard helping make World Wide Pressed Flower Guild what it is today . For this we are grateful .

Name: Kate Chu

Where are you from? Born in Beijing, China. Have been living in Southern California for 35 years.

How Long have You been with World Wide Pressed Flower Guild ? Since founding in 2001.

How Long have You been doing Pressed Flower Art ? Pressing at age 5 or 6 making art since 1991. I listened to a story about pressing beautiful fall leaves on the radio. It has gotten me started collecting and pressing in books. I was only pressing at that time to preserve flowers/leaves or making botanical specimens of herbs. I have discovered framed pressed flower art while travel for business in Taiwan. I bought two books and started after I got back home. My art in those early years resemble traditional Chinese paintings. I searched for books in my local library and found Penny Black’s Pressed Flower Art after I become proficient with pressing and designing. This was the start of exploring many different ways of designing. I have started with basic pastel painting, studying art by reading and experimenting at the same time. My friends urged me to teach and share. I have started teaching part-time in 1997. Teaching actually pushed me to explore even more in pressing techniques and designing. Now with daily exchanges online, I have learned a lot from friends all over the world.

Do you remember the first thing you pressed ? Fall leaves.

What's your favorite mediums /materials? Pressed flowers on thin paper or silk. I also love to design pressed flower jewelries.

What is your favorite Flower to Press and How do you do it? There are so many but peony is my all time favorite. I press it petal by petal and then reassemble it back.

Please Feel free to tell us about your work, inspiration, and thoughts with us too. Nature is where my inspiration came from most of the time. I love to walk in the hills where I live. These pictures were inspired by the lovely spring scenes where I live.

Where  can we find your work ? web ,blog , shops ,etc    www.pressed-flowers.com

Please share tips ? Press everything. Sometimes weeds are perfect for a picture too.

Tell stories that You want people to know about the guild and pressed art.
Pressed flower art touches so many disciplines. It is a serious science that we constantly experimenting and improving pressing techniques and preserve methods. It is a serious art that we use botanical materials as medium to communicate with viewers. It is a good tool for stress management. It is great to teach children and adults about pressed flower art. Through education, they not only learn the techniques and designs but also deepen their environmental conciseness and further their own path on protecting the nature. Pressed flower art can be as serious as fine art or as easy as children’s craft. One does not need to have any art background to start. It has so many faces. It is fun. And it makes one feel good looking at the beauties of nature being pressed and saved by you. It especially is rewarding to share your art and passion with others.
The guild is where we share on daily bases without the barrier of physical location and time-zone. Many of us have never met face to face yet we all became friends that not only we share pressed flower but also our joy or sorrow of our lives.
The guild has brought me many opportunities to grow as an artist, as a teacher, as an organizer, and as a leader. I hope to share my passion and love with even more.
